One of the biggest challenges home workers face is staying motivated. Not always a problem for me. Some days I spring out of bed and can barely get my coffee before I rush into my office raring to go. True confessions, though. Others days, I wonder how I will even make it to my desk. Much less, stay there and work all day.
For those of us who work at home, this can be very frustrating. We typically don’t have others around us to boost us up and pull us out of a funk. Nope – we must motivate ourselves. And this motivation can be critical to our success. Why? Because, as motivational speakers will tell you, sticking with it through whatever life hands us, gives the most important likelihood for success.
Very early on, I learned the power of the word. In college, my roomie and I loved seeing really cool quotes. Way way way before post it notes existed, we scribbled out famous or awe-inspiring quotes on various scraps of paper. We thumb tacked or taped them all over the dorm room, referring to them whenever we felt discouraged. Indeed, it got us through that first year of college.
Little did I know then that my love of quotes would be such an important tool for me throughout my life. They maintain me and remind me, that – this too shall pass. And, I get up and keep going.
Fall down seven times, stand up eight
Yes, it is a rather old proverb. But, this proverb says it all and is a foundation belief that leads to success. Undeniably. The main thing to remember from this quote is that IF you get up when you fall, then you are a winner. Make no mistake. If you are alive – you are going to fall. Over and over. Looking at every successful person, none of them made it to the top without taking many, many falls.
The only difference between a successful person and others: Getting up more times than you fall. Too often, we look at falling as a failure. But really, falling becomes a way to learn. A fall is a mistake – and really, no learning occurs except from a mistake. Think back over your life and when you learned an important lesson. Did you ever learn from getting it right? Nope -we learn from getting it wrong.
So, when you fall, CELEBRATE!!!! Look at it as an opportunity that you are indeed lucky to have experienced. From the fall, you will stand up and move on. You are going to be a success!!!!
All our dreams come true
And remember, if you are working at home, you have huge dreams to be independent and free. Maybe even independently wealthy. Don’t forget that all your dreams do come true when you have the courage to go after them. Walt Disney really said it best.
Working for yourself can be a very scary proposition. And that fear can make you give up. But don’t give up. Take heart, be strong and keep pursuing your dreams!!!
Courage – what is it? Staying motivated!
Speaking of the courage you need to pursue your dreams. It doesn’t mean that you are not afraid at times. Mark Twain famously reminds us that, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear — not absence of fear.” I heard others say, “It’s not bravery if you weren’t afraid.”
So, don’t forget, it is OK to be afraid. But, what you have to do is face that fear and do it anyway. Most of what you are afraid of never happens anyway. But, it can still be very scary to face those fears and do it anyway. That knot in your stomach? The queasy feeling in your stomach? Shaking hands? Sweating like crazy? Those will all go away when you face that fear and do it anyway. And, the more often you face that fear down, the less scary it becomes.
Do one thing every day that scares you
What helps with overcoming fear? Force yourself to do one thing every day that scares you. The more often you do that one thing that scares you, the less fearful it will become. Start little. Don’t take on the biggest thing that scares you, at first. Take on some little thing that scares you as you discover you can survive. Then next, take on something bigger.
Your fears won’t disappear – we all face scary things because we are alive. But, the more you face down your fears, the stronger you become.
If going through hell, KEEP GOING
Winston Churchill said it well. At least, that is who has been attributed with this quote. But, regardless of who said it – words to live by. If you are going through hell, you don’t want to stay there. Keep going and you will get through it. Goes along well with the fundamental saying, “This too shall pass.” When we are in the middle of hell, it is quite easy to think it will last forever. But, it won’t. Good times and bad times are all a part of living. It may seem like it will be forever, but get up and keep going.
No cliff is so tall, that it can’t be climbed
Because do remember, that no cliff is so tall that it can’t be climbed. Don’t believe that? Look at the cliffs in Normandy. Go there, if you get a chance. If not, watch the 1962 classic movie, The Longest Day. Despite unbelievable odds, on the D-Day landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944, our soldiers scaled those cliffs.
It may take a long time. It may be hard to do. But, if you don’t give up, you can scale any cliff.
Success is walking from failure to failure, with no loss of enthusiasm
And when you are scaling those cliffs, then try to maintain your enthusiasm. Maintain your energy and maintain your style.
Keep on motivating. . .
I remember at times getting frustrated because I looked at a motivating show or read something motivating, and then it wore off. I used to wonder what was wrong with me – why I didn’t maintain my enthusiasm. It really hit me when I say this excellent quote from Zig Ziglar. He said, “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing — that’s why we recommend it daily.”
Yep, folks, motivating yourself is a daily activity! As I said earlier, life happens. And it is much easier to fall down than it is to get back up. (Why is that?) So, if you are not one of those folks who are perpetually happy no matter what – not always a glass half-full person, then you will need to motivate daily.
Printing out posters and hanging them in your office can go a long way to maintaining your motivation. Remind yourself that you will be successful if you keep going. No matter what, when you fall, stand back up and get going.
