OK. Let’s say you have decided. You ARE going to start your online business. You know that you are not quite ready to quit your job and go “whole hog.” Someday you will be ready to do that. But, today, you are going to keep your J-O-B, while building your business on the side. Eventually, you know this will pay off. But, in the meantime, you may be asking yourself how to find extra time to start or build your business.
Indeed, if we have a side business, how many times have we all said, “If only I had more time then I could get more done in my online business?” The answer, although obvious, may be surprising. The solution is NOT getting more time. For sure, we all have the exact same amount of time. Thus, the key is to manage the time we do have. The secret is to make time work more effectively for us.
So where can YOU find the time in your day to work on your side business? Well, even if you think you don’t have time to take on anything else, it might surprise you to discover how much time you actually waste during the day. Because, YOU can start an online business whether you hold down a full time job or not.
Making the time to work your business
Many times, people have the mental picture that it has to be all or nothing. They think in order to be their own boss, they have to take a major plunge. This includes quitting their day job to put full-time effort into building an online business. But, if you have the security of a day job that pays the bills and provides you with health benefits, it is possible (and probably wisest) to keep the job. At the same time, you can work on launching and growing your business part-time.
But, where will you get the free time to do that? Well, to start, you can set the alarm clock and get up an hour earlier in the mornings to work on your business. Lunch time can be spent working on your business. Realistically, since your job will be online, you have able to access it anywhere from your phone or tablet. Although it may not seem like enough time, you can even spend five minutes of your break working on your business.
“Wait time” now becomes time to work for your business
Once you get into a hyper focus for building your business, you will realize all wait time is now “free” work time. For example, while waiting for the doctor or dentist appointment, you can get some work done. While waiting in the grocery line – yep, you can work. Post office? Driver’s license bureau? Half time at your kid’s soccer game? Those are all potential minutes to wait productively. Even if you commute to work, you can work on your business during the commute, too. Moms who work at home must be very creative in finding time to work. The most obvious time to get some work done is when the kids are taking a nap. I know – you are tired because being a mom is more than a full time job. But, if you look at giving up nap time as a temporary loss, then your business will grow.
Most obviously, you can also temporarily give up the hours you spend sitting in front of the television – watching movies or gaming. Not much is a bigger time drain than that big screen in your living room or bedroom. In addition, you can give up one hour of sleep at night to work on the business and work two-four weekends a month.
When you realize that you are working to build your business and reach your dreams, you will find the challenge of finding the free time well worth it. This perspective will make all the difference for you. Remember, you are not making more time for your boss. Instead, you are making more time for you and your family. The lack of sleep and the temporary lack of free time becomes a positive experience that you have decided is worth it.
How to use snippets of time
While it may seem difficult to use those little snippets of time while at the doctor’s office, you can easily arrange tasks to accomplish in a short time. With many tools available on smart phones, allocate tasks that require little time to accomplish to your phone. For example, it is easy to use your phone to catch up on your daily pins. With even five free minutes, you can get most of your pinning done for they day. With a 20 minute wait, you can get most of your pins for the week. Five minute sessions are perfect for posting on Instagram or or Twitter. You can even use the time to respond to emails or reply to your posts.
I highly recommend keeping a list of 5-minute or less tasks with you at all times. Keep adding to this list as you think of things that need to be done and can be done quickly. When you next find yourself standing in line or sitting in a waiting room, dig the list out and complete the tasks. You will soon become adjusted to taking advantage of these snippets of time and find you have accomplished much.
Then, when you have larger blocks of time, you can devote it to the more complex tasks such as creating pins, writing blog posts or researching. While you may think this would be stressful, I find that it is really de-stressing. Nothing makes me more nervous than wasting time waiting and I think most people agree. So, when I started taking advantage of those little time slots to accomplish something toward my business, I felt calmer and more relaxed. Even at the end of a very busy day, I felt a sense of accomplishment because I completed many “little” things.
“Giving up” free time will build your business
At first, it might seem like you are giving up a lot of time (or freedom). But, if you work around your day job and stick with it, you can steadily increase your income with the online business. Then, after the hard work comes the rewards. After putting in the hard work, you can comfortably afford to let go of the job you now have. Then you will have a full-time career that YOU are in control of.
If you happen to be someone who is in a position to leave your day job, there are still some things that you need to consider. Suddenly, you find yourself having the same forty plus hours you gave at the office to work on your online business. If this is your situation, ALWAYS begin working for yourself right away. Don’t take a few weeks off to “celebrate” your freedom. If you wait to work your online business when you feel like it, you run the risk of losing valuable initiative. Instead, let the excitement about your future drive you and propel you forward.
With the benefit of working your online business full time, you have time to devote the steady attention your business needs to continually grow. Rather than squeezing your business into a tight schedule, you have the time you need. Don’t waste it. Move forward fast and completely.
Now is the best time to start your online business
Whether you have a full work week to devote to your business or you have to make free time in your day to build your business, there is no better time than this moment. It is not so much about finding free time. It is more about making the decision to use your time to build your own online business. Today will soon be yesterday and you won’t ever get that opportunity back. Look at your schedule and find those gaps in which you waste time. Instead of continuing to waste those minutes that drag into hours, take advantage of the moment and work your business.
As discussed in an earlier post, it will not be easy. But, after all, what in life that is worth having is easy? Once you decide to use your time wisely to build your business, your commitment will be a huge personal benefit. Because building your online business is all about building a secure future for you and your family.
